Love Bugs - We Hate Them

Florida is full of bugs. During April and May the Love Bugs arrive. We'd never experienced them before. Love Bug flights travel in groups by the million and stick around for four to five weeks. We've endured three Love Bug invasions here in Titusville. The first arrival was bad and the second was even worse! The third came almost two weeks after we were sure they were gone for good. These annoying little critters swarm us, fly around attached to their mate and leave their nasty guts on every surface at the end of their life cycle! The females live only three to four days while the males live a little longer. Once they've mated, they stick together at all times, tail to tail and are referred to as honeymoon or double headed bugs. They have an acidic chemistry. They die in large numbers, on windshields, hoods and radiator grills, and leave behind a nasty goo that can cause paint pitting. We couldn't get the buggy mess off our vehicle until we learned that wet dryer sheets help. June is right around the corner and we still see these little buggers doing their Love Bug thing. This years crop hung in there and was definitely a hearty one!

We're heading north to Daytona soon. We've heard that it's black fly country. I guess we should be glad that Love Bugs just "bug" us, they don't bite! Black flies are another story. Maybe we'll get lucky and they will move on before we get there.

Every dark spot is a Love Bug or a colony of them

Love Bugs made it almost impossible to walk over the causeway
