New Buffalo Michigan

October 7 - 8, 2016

The trip to New Buffalo was unpleasant but our stay in this cute little lake town, was very nice. We were the only boat at the Municipal marina. It is shallow at the transient dock and we are at the mercy of a west wind which caused creaking and groaning! After the mast incident, this is nothing to complain about! We are safe here.

The Fall Harvest Festival is being held this weekend. This is the first festival we are on time for. We are excited to attend. It is much like most small town festivals; a 5k fun run, booths with custom art and jewelry, wine and beer tasting and music. We sat in the grass and listened to a 70’s rock and blues cover band. It is a very nice day and tons of people come and go, enjoying this warm fall afternoon with us. We returned to Mystic but can hear the party across the channel until the festival closes at 10:00.

Friday night we walked into town and had a beer at Casey’s. The bartender graciously put the weather on for us so we could catch up on Hurricane Matthew. It was good to hear that so many people fared well through the storm.

We took an early morning walk out to the Lake to inspect the conditions on Saturday. They were unfavorable for us to leave but the lake and shoreline are breathtaking. The dunes are gorgeous! We climbed the dune boardwalk stairway to get a better view. The water on Lake Michigan is beautiful too. It is every shade of green and blue that you can imagine and looks like Caribbean waters.

Dave spent Saturday retying the mast cradle down. He made shortened the ropes and secured everything well. He also caught up on engine maintenance. We were in bed early. On Sunday we aimed for Hammond, Indian We will bypass Chicago in order to enter the Inland Waterway as soon as possible. It’s time for us to get off the Great Lakes! Once we enter the Calumet River we will begin an entirely new chapter on our journey. Like the Great Lakes, each day will bring us something new to learn and to experience but the moody, brooding intensity of the lakes will be behind us. We will have to pay attention to other challenges like staying out of the way of Tows and getting into a safe anchorage or marina before dark. e will We will have land on either side of us! Somehow, there is comfort in that.

You two have certainly earned your stripes in this lake voyage. Hope your skills are not put to the test for many days to come. Hugs!
