Coinjock North Carolina Aboard Veritas

The Captain and crew of Veritas are all up and ready for a new day of travel at our usual oh-dark-thirty. Dave dragged me outside at dawn to view and photograph the beautiful red sunrise. The warmth fills us with energy and joy for the coming day.

Good Morning Alligator River

Beautiful start to our day

Good Morning Veritas

We left the dock at Alligator River Marina at 7:30 am and headed for the Albermarle Sound. I remember crossing these waters back in 1982 aboard Keewatin, our 23 foot Coronado. That day was blustery. Our little boat heeled heavily in huge waves. I was terrified and beginning to panic. Dave sternly caught my attention, told me to calm down then talked me through, getting to a safe anchorage while he wrestled with tiller in ominous conditions. He has continued to do this calming act throughout our life together.

This crossing aboard Veritas would be in calm weather. We settled into a gentle cruise across the Albermarle and into the sheltered water of the North River. We arrived at Coinjock Marina around 1:00. Docking was easy at the long face dock. There were only a few boats already settled in place. With the wind behind us, we simply glided up to the dock and tucked in. We walked up to the marina office and were finally able to get rid of our vast collection of recyclables. We'd been carrying and adding to our stash since leaving Beaufort, North Carolina.

Coinjock is a cute marina and store with a dockside restaurant and the Sandbar Lounge. There is patio seating along the river. A sign boasts of outdoor concerts during the summer months. We chose a seat at the Sandbar and found Sam Adams Oktoberfest on tap. Susan and David joined us for a cocktail. As we chatted, we realized how just how close we are to completing this trip. In only two days; they will cross their Great Loop wake. They are excited but also feeling bittersweet about their journey coming to an end. We are very happy to be along for the ride.

Coinjock is remote and feels like the middle of nowhere, but it's a really nice stop. More boats joined us throughout the day and locals stopped in for a drink or dinner. This is a popular spot. Tomorrow we will cross the Virginia border. We're on the home stretch!
