A visit with Loopers Susan & David

We enjoy the connections we make in our travels and we foster them whenever possible. We had the opportunity to run into our Looper friends, David and Susan, when we drove through Pennsylvania on our way home from Boston this summer. They agreed to meet us in Erie, Pennsylvania for a quick visit.

We first met David and Susan on America's Great Loop. They were aboard s/v Veritas at an anchorage called the Cumberland Tow Head located just before the Cumberland River. Veritas was the last of five boats to arrive at this lovely anchorage. We all traveled down the Cumberland and through the Barclay Lock, arriving at Green Turtle Bay as a group. We all took a couple days to catch our breath after the long trip down the Mighty Mississippi, up the Ohio and then through the picturesque Cumberland. We had a wonderful time in the town of Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Dock Tales were always popular and well attended at Green Turtle Bay. Our new friends Mac and Charles brought temporary tattoos to one of our gatherings which made for a fun evening for all! When we left Green Turtle Bay, we worked our way down the Tennessee and the Tombigbee before reconnecting with Veritas in Mobile, Alabama. Buddy Boats on the Loop continue to leap frog along the course and catch up again and again.

We are staying at the waterfront Marriott right on Lake Erie. David and Susan found us easily and took us for a drive through Presque Isle. We'd visited here before, but enjoyed sharing it with our friends this time. We stopped at Beach 10 to enjoy the sunset. The wind was blowing a good 35 mph. We will have to navigate these waters if we plan to complete our Great Loop adventure. David grew up here so he shared his local knowledge with us. My hands were a little sweaty thinking of the challenging conditions we could face.

Veritas will cross her wake in Virginia. We have a long way to go to cross ours in St. Ignace, Michigan. We would love it if David and Susan were waiting for us in Erie when we pass through. Regardless, we plan to keep an eye on their progress and visit them again when we can! After all; we are all part of a floating community of friends!
