Cheers To Unlikely Connections

We've been playing tourist in Boston this week. One place on our list was a stop at Cheers, the bar from the 80's sitcom "Where everybody knows your name". As we approached the entrance we saw a tour bus pull up. Both Dave and I increased our pace and scurried past the gathering crowd to get in. The first bar was full, but we were directed to two other options. We finally found a seat in the upstairs "set" bar.

As we sat at the bar enjoying a cold Wiscassett IPA, Dave heard the young man next to us say he was from Minnesota. We started chatting with the couple and learned that they are from Duluth. When we mentioned that we once kept our boat at Knife River our conversation turned to who we know. We were thrilled to learn that we have a connection with these strangers from home.

The couple, Beth and Brian, are in Boston for a long weekend birthday celebration. Brian is turning 30. His dad grew up in Knife River. We asked if they've been to Emily's Lighthouse Restaurant on scenic 61. It turns out that Brian's father is dating one of the sisters who run Emily's. We mentioned that we know one of the sisters, Claire Dornfeld! Dave grew up with Claire's former husband, Mark Dornfeld. Claire was one of our kids teachers at ECFE (preschool) in Stillwater. When Brian heard this, he just smiled and told us that Claire is his father's girlfriend!

In awe of experiencing yet another small world encounter, we are reminded, once again, that everyone is connected within six degrees of separation. We continue to prove this in odd places with random people, mostly within one to three degrees. It is one of the joys of travel! We are blessed; instead of just a tourist morning in Boston, we found a connection to home!
